Angora Rabbits - History and Introduction

Angora rabbits are believed by many to have arrived from Ankara, Turkey. Others think, that they were named so due to their long white hair, as had been cats, also thought to have been brought from that region. Some legends say that Angoras date as far back as to the times of ancient Babylonians, who worshipped a benevolent rabbit god.

Presumably, a monk bred the first Angora rabbit in the 12th century in England. The French Angora was produced by a crossbreeding of the English Angora with the Belgian Blanc de Bouscat, in France. That happened in the 18th century. Newly bred species varied in size, hair qualities, and possible numbers of color variations.

The fine and gentle fur of Angoras has contributed to the growth of their popularity among fiber-concerned people. One species can provide enough fur in one year to make a warm sweater. Angora Rabbits are not the animals for the uninformed or inexperienced. They require thorough care, regular grooming and qualified medical supervision.

Rabbits are naturally mild and gentle. If cared for properly, they become irreplaceable pets for their owners. Care requirements of Angoras are way different than those of shorthaired rabbits. Cage size, time spent on care, and handling procedures of Angora Rabbits should be defined beforehand.
