For those, who buy Angora rabbits or for those who are preparing to buy one in the foreseeable future, it would be appropriate to contact American Rabbit Breeders Association. This organization
provides care instruction manuals and show catalogs listing all scheduled shows. For Angora lovers there is the National Angora Rabbits Breeders Club that supplies 4 issues of Angora news and guidebooks.
When choosing a cage and its location, the first thing to consider is safety, as well as easy access. Dogs and cats may be hostile toward rabbits. Angoras should not be exposed to direct sunrays, rain or sharp temperature fluctuations. The size of the cage is important. It should be big enough to allow the Angora rabbit to stretch out for the entire length of the body and to provide enough space for active playing.
At the bottom of the cage there must be a mesh with a tray underneath to allow urine and feces to
fall through easily. The tray must be cleaned several times a day, in order to prevent the rabbit from breathing on its own ammonia gas and getting breathing problems.
Angora rabbits require regular grooming. There must be two types of brush in the house - a pin needle brush and a slicker brush. The pin needle brush is good for locating mats and disentangling them. That is much the case with English Angoras, which have dense and delicate hair. The slicker brush is good for general hair care, and it is always used after dematting.
Feeding should be well balanced and arrange in accordance with the rabbits' individual digestive characteristics. They build their own immune system to meet the particular environment. The food should contain duly large amount of fiber and proteins. Green stuff, like carrots and lettuce, is better restricted, because there is a risk of diarrhea, which is in no way acceptable with Angora rabbits. Pellet foods and various grass substitutes are available in pet shops.
Angora rabbits, except for the Giant, are extremely prone to hairballs and coat mats because they always strive to groom themselves. They can't vomit, and much of molt hair gets into the intestinal tract. If too much wool is amassed, the bowels get blocked, which can be fatal for the animal. Wool mats can result in sores and wounds, and even fly-maggot infection. For these reasons, Angora rabbits demand regular and qualified grooming.
