Angora rabbits are definitely not only bred for shows and petting, but also for wool spinning. Sweaters and jumpers made of Angora rabbit wool are very warm and are on demand during periods of low temperature. This warmth keeping property is attributable to the structure of the hair.
An Angora rabbit's hair consists of three parts. The guard hair is the outer hair that is thinner than the other two. The rest of the hair gets thicker down to the skin. The undercoat is strong and dense enough to provide sufficient protection against cooling.
There are different ways to gather wool. These are shearing, clipping and plucking. The first two are less time taking, and, therefore, are more popular. There are electric shears, which substantially facilitate the procedure. But there are reasons regarding why plucking is in many ways more preferable. Plucking only works with the English, French and Satin Angoras. German Angoras do not molt, therefore only clipping and shearing are efficient.
Plucking is more effective during molting periods. The hair manages to grow as long as 3 to 4 inches, and it is a lot easier to process. The fall out of hairs, which is encountered by those who wear Angora products, occurs when shorter hairs fail to get into the spin and remain loose. Therefore, plucked hair yarns are much more likely to produce high quality clothes. The wool of all four Angora rabbits is highly prized by wool manufacturers.
