Angora Rabbits - Description

There are four types of Angora rabbits: the English Angora, French Angora, Satin Angora and the German (Giant) Angora. They differ in size, thickness of hair and care needed. The English Angora is the smallest of the four. Its weight is 5-7.5 pounds.

It has very delicate and soft fiber with little guard hair. Long facial hair and tasseled ears add extravagancy to its appearance. Due to long tassels of hair on the ears, they are mistaken for dogs, more often than not. They vary in colors greatly. You can find white, fawn, chocolate, tort or broken (combining two or more colors) English Angoras.

Satin Angoras are bigger than English Angoras. Satins do not have fringed or tasseled ears. They weigh in 6.5-9-5 pounds. They have enchanting and luxurious, shiny hair, which makes the Angora rabbit the most valuable and hard to find of rabbits. They do not have long facial hair; their legs are less wooly. The Satin's fur is less dense than the English's fur. The range of coloring is more limited than that of the English: they occur in red, chocolate, fawn and black.

The French Angora is more 'rabbit-like'. It weighs in 7.5-10.5 pounds. They do not have much food on the feet, head and ears. The percentage of guard wool is high alleviating to grooming and care because the hair is much less tangle prone. That non-tangling characteristic makes the breed more preferable among children and average owners. The range of coloring is very extensive: fawn, white, black, chocolate, red and broken.

The German Angora (the Giant) is the biggest of all Angora breeds. They weigh in 8.5-12 pounds. Extremely long wool also contributes to the size. Despite great length of the wool, Germans do not require special grooming because the wool is very strong. Besides, they do not molt intensively and they are less susceptible to hairballs.

German Angoras can boast of wool productivity, which is four times higher than that of other Angoras. At the same time, they demand no more feeding than other Angoras. Germans are albinos. They have white hair and red eyes.Closely related to German Angora rabbits are the darker breeds, which are referred to as German Hybrids.
