Angora rabbits are believed by many to have arrived from Ankara, Turkey. Others think, that they were named so due to their long white hair, as had been cats, also thought to have been brought from that region. Some legends say that Angoras date as far back as to the times of ancient Babylonians, who worshipped a benevolent rabbit god.
There are four types of Angora rabbits: the English Angora, French Angora, Satin Angora and the German (Giant) Angora. They differ in size, thickness of hair and care needed. The English Angora is the smallest of the four. Its weight is 5-7.5 pounds.
For those, who buy Angora rabbits or who are preparing to buy one in the foreseeable future, it would be appropriate to contact American Rabbit Breeders Association. This organization provides: care instruction manuals and show catalogs, where all scheduled shows take place and are presented. For Angora lovers there is the National Angora Rabbits Breeders Club that supplies 4 issues of Angora news and guidebooks.
Angora rabbits are definitely not only bred for shows and petting, but also for wool spinning. Sweaters and jumpers made of Angora rabbit wool are very warm and are on demand during periods of low temperature. This warmth keeping property is attributable to the structure of the hair.
